Each week, Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl hosts Top Ten Tuesday, a way to collectively celebrate our love of books via lists. This week, we’re talking about all the funny books. I read a lot, but I there aren’t that many books that make me literally laugh out loud. The ten books listed below stand out to me because they did exactly that. I’ve even reread a couple of them to see if they were as funny as I remembered, and I was not disappointed! So if you’re looking for some young adult books to make you LOL, check out one of these!
1. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston
What do you do when you overhear your boyfriend talking about how he doesn’t want to be together anymore? Break up with him, of course. Luckily, when this happens to Sophie at the start of winter break, she has a giant crew of family members to comfort her. And also…set her up on a bunch of blind dates?! Yup, to help Sophie get over her heartbreak, 10 different family members pick out 10 different boys and 10 different activities, and Sophie doesn’t have any information other than some vague hints. Some of the dates are decent, some are epic disasters, and one just might help her get over her heartbreak after all.
2. The Field Guide to the North American Teenager by Ben Philippe
What do you do when your mom decides to move from Canada to Austin, Texas, where you will undoubtedly stand out? Catalog your encounters with everyone you meet in a super snarky journal, of course. The thing is, as Norris spends more time with these people, they become more than just entries in his “field guide”-they become real people, and maybe even real friends. Until something happens that messes everything up. Norris’s journal will make you cringe, but it will also make you laugh.
3. Goldfish by Nat Luurtsema
When it turns out Lou isn’t actually as great at swimming as she thought, she needs something else to fill her time. Luckily, a chance meeting with a motley group of boys on a quest for fame changes all that. You see, Gabriel, Roman, and Pete are dancers who want to win a reality tv show-but the world is full of dancers, and they need something to set them apart. So they approach Lou about turning their dance moves into a synchronized swimming routine. Lou agrees, despite not knowing anything about synchronized swimming, and, well, plenty of hilarious hijinks ensue. Seriously, I laughed out loud SO MUCH during this book.
4. I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo
Desi is student body president, star of the soccer team, a shoo-in for Stanford…and a complete failure at flirting. So much of a failure that her friends have literally named her botched attempts ‘flails.’ But anything is possible when you have a plan, and, after a particularly humiliating flail, Desi spends a weekend marathoning K-dramas and realizes that they all follow basically the same steps for falling in love. Enter Desi’s newest plan, the “K Drama Steps to True Love,” which Desi plans to use to snag herself a cute, artsy type. Each step brings entertainment, in the form of boat rescues, love triangles, and more, but eventually Desi learns that real love doesn’t always follow a plan.
5. It’s Not Me, It’s You by Stephanie Kate Strohm
Honestly, I could very easily put every single Stephanie Kate Strohm book on this list (honorable mentions to That’s Not What I Heard and Prince in Disguise!), but this is the first book of hers that I read and remains my favorite in terms of hilarity. After suffering a very public breakup, Avery wonders why none of her relationships have ever worked out, so she decides to conduct a thorough investigation of all of her past relationships to figure out what went wrong. Conveniently, she has an oral history project due in history, and this works for that too! As Avery interviews her past boyfriends, family and friends, she learns a lot about herself…and maybe also about who she should really be with as well.
6. A Match Made in Mehendi by Nandini Bajpai
Simi is the latest in a long line of Indian matchmakers-after she inadvertently sets up her cousin with a perfect match, she gives in to family tradition (in the hope of raising her social status, of course), and starts matchmaking-by creating an app, obviously. Her matchmaking service quickly becomes wildly popular, but when two very different people are unexpectedly matched together, the existing social hierarchy is turned upside down, and she’s suddenly not so popular with her classmates. Can she fix things, and does she even want to? I remember chuckling consistently throughout this book, so it’s definitely one to pick up if you need a laugh.
7. The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding
I have yet to meet an Amy Spalding book I don’t love, but this one tops them all, in my view. When Abby gets a coveted summer internship at her favorite local boutique, she’s less than pleased to learn she is actually sharing the role (and competing for a real job at the store) with Jordi Perez. The problem is that she actually starts to like her competition…like, REALLY like her. But a difference in opinion about something puts their relationship in jeopardy, and Abby will have to reconcile her own self-confidence with how others view her. Listen, the fashion-centric rom-com is amazing, but my favorite part of this story is Abby’s unexpected friendship with lacross-playing dude-bro Jax, which is truly hilarious.
8. Technically, You Started It by Lana Wood Johnson
I LOOOOOVED this book told entirely in text messages about a case of mistaken identity. You see, there are TWO people named Martin Nathaniel Monroe II in this scenario, and Haley thinks she knows which one she’s talking to. The one she doesn’t hate, obviously. As a quick question about an assignment turns into lengthy conversations, Haley starts questioning everything from which Martin she’s texting to whether her previous opinions are even true anymore. It seems like Haley and Martin are destined for a meet-cute, except with things still up in the air about WHICH Martin is involved, it could actually be a meet-catastrophe.
9. Tweet Cute by Emma Lord
Oh boy, this book is not just hilarious but also hunger-inducing-you will want to eat every single grilled cheese and baked good you read about in this story. Pepper and Jack are two teenagers who are publicly feuding via the social media for their families’ businesses, while also privately falling for each other on an anonymous chat app. Each snarky social media post is funny, but as things escalate and get more and more personal, Pepper and Jack are destined for a collision of epic proportions. Whether it results in romance or rubble, well, you’ll have to read the book to find out.
10. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
Dimple’s parents want nothing more than for her to find the Ideal Indian Husband. They’ve got someone in mind, but haven’t told her about him. Meanwhile, Rishi’s parents have told him that the girl they want him to be with will be at the same summer program, and he’ll have to woo her. So what happens when one person knows about an arrangement, and the other doesn’t? Shenanigans, of course. You’ll laugh out loud from the first coffee thrown in someone’s face, I promise (but who gets coffee in their face? You’ll have to read the book to find out!).
Well, there you have it, friends-ten young adult books to make you LOL (plus, you know, a few bonuses because I’m extra). Tell me-what’s the funniest book you’ve read recently?

Same! I could only think of one book that literally made me laugh out loud – THE ROSIE PROJECT. I could think of others that made me smile or chuckle to myself, but really LOL? That’s rare for me when I’m reading.
Happy TTT!
